One of the things I love doing is sharing knowledge.

While I did hate to do presentations in school, just as much as any other presumably, I discovered that I loved doing sessions about something I am actually passionate about. I started involving myself in public speaking and I have been lucky enough to be invited to all kinds events all around the world and speak to numerous people throughout the years.

I try to do my part in being an ally and improving the (tech) conferences and events scene. As part of that, I kindly ask you to read my guidelines below for attending and speaking at conferences.

Diversity & Inclusion #

One of the things I find very important is diversity & inclusion. For events: from promotion, to speaker lineup, to attendees, everything, I like it to be as inclusive as possible.

I don’t want to pretend I am perfect at this front, I’m learning and improving as I go as I believe we all should. Feel free to kindly call me out on things that you spot so we can talk about it.

I found that this article from Ashe Dryden resonates well with what I believe.

Some of the things I find important can be found below, this is nowhere near an exhaustive list, but I think its a great starting point.

Enforced Code of Conduct #

The Code of Conduct reasures everyone that this should be a safe event to visit. It should be a guarantee that people will act accordingly whenever something bad happens. This is non negotiable and the Code of Conduct should be easy to find on your website and in print where applicable. Bonus points if you list the local emergency services and how to contact them if required.

More bonus points if you can list a handful of (diverse) individuals, with their contacts, who are not directly involved with the event organization and are willing to mediate between the organization and the person something happened to, if required. By doing this, a broader set of attendees will feel safe turning to one of these individuals that resonate with them whenever necessary.

We all hope that any of the above is never needed, but you will be very happy you did think about it and arranged it when the situation arises.

This also means events should ban bad actors, someone who broke a previous Code of Conduct, to the best of their knowledge.

Diverse Speaker Lineup #

Diversity can mean many things. Usually the first thought is: we need more women. That is of course only one aspect. At events where I am, I love to see and hang out with as many gender identities, ethnic backgrounds, ages, and races as possible.

If your speaker lineup consists of mainly 1 group, it is most likely that I will reach out and offer help to see if we can make that better.

Diversity Scholarship #

Most of us speaking or attending these events are blessed with the means to do so. How amazing would it be to pay that forward?

I’d love it if your event somehow offers a set of free tickets or reduced price tickets or any other form of help to people that would otherwise not be able to attend.
